How the market is laid out

Jagalchi is really two markets stacked together: an outdoor street market along the waterfront where vendors sell live and dried seafood, and the multi-story indoor Jagalchi Fish Market building, where the ground floor sells fresh catch and upper floors house restaurants that will cook what you buy downstairs, or serve their own menu directly.

Neither section requires a plan to enjoy — walking the outdoor stalls alone, watching the sorting and haggling, is worth the visit even if you don't buy anything.

What to actually order

Hoe (raw sliced fish, similar to sashimi) is the signature order — flounder and rockfish are the common everyday choices. If raw fish isn't for you, salt-grilled shrimp and butter-grilled scallops are widely available from street-side grills and are easier to enjoy on the spot without sitting down.

The typical process at the indoor market: choose your seafood from a tank or table on the ground floor, agree on a price and weight, then carry it upstairs where a restaurant will prepare it for a separate seating and preparation charge. Prices aren't always posted, so confirm the total cost before the seafood is cut.

  • Hoe (raw sliced fish) — the market's specialty
  • Grilled shrimp and scallops — good for eating while walking
  • Grilled or steamed crab — heavier, sold by weight
  • Dried seafood and side dishes — good for a lighter, cheaper snack

Ordering without Korean

Pointing works. Vendors are used to foreign visitors and will usually hold up fingers or write a number for pricing, or use a phone calculator to show a total. If a price feels unclear, a simple 'how much' gesture with your phone's calculator app open avoids most misunderstandings before food is prepared.

It's reasonable to ask the price before agreeing to anything, especially for anything sold by weight — this is normal market practice, not rude.

Around the market

Jagalchi sits right next to Nampo-dong and BIFF Square, so it pairs naturally with an afternoon of street food and shopping in the same visit. The rooftop of the main market building has a free observation deck with a harbor view, worth the elevator ride up even if you've already eaten.

Good to know: Stall hours, closure days and prices can vary by vendor and season. If a specific stall's hours matter to your plan, it's worth confirming on arrival rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
